Plasterer in Newcastle

Looking for a plasterer in Newcastle who turns up, quotes a fixed price and leaves walls you can paint straight onto? That is the job. Dean and his team plaster across the city every week: reskims in Heaton and Jesmond flats, float and set on stripped-back terrace walls in Fenham and Benwell, new plasterboard and ceilings in Gosforth and Kenton extensions, artex covered in Walker and Westerhope. No subcontractors, no travel charges, and a finish that decorators thank us for.

Plastering Newcastle homes

Newcastle's Victorian and Edwardian terraces and Tyneside flats have original lime plaster that is now a century old. Some of it is sound and only needs skimming; a lot of it is blown, hollow and cracked, and needs hacking off and float and set on the bare brick before a skim. The honest answer is different for every wall, so we tap every one on the quote visit and tell you which it is, because skimming over blown plaster is money wasted.

Ceilings are the other big Newcastle job. Lath and plaster ceilings in Jesmond, Sandyford and Heaton sag and crack with age, and the fix is usually to take them down or overboard them and skim, with new coving if you want it. In the 1960s and 70s estates and the Tyneside flats that were modernised then, artex ceilings are everywhere; we seal and skim light artex and overboard heavy or cracked artex, never sanding it because older coatings can contain asbestos.

We also do the plastering that follows other trades: patching after rewires and new plumbing, boarding and skimming new kitchen and bathroom walls, plastering new openings and extensions, and the full strip and replaster that comes after damp treatment. One team covers all of it, from Kingston Park to Byker, so the job does not stall between trades.

Skimming Newcastle homes

Newcastle's terraces and Tyneside flats have old plaster that is usually fine to skim once the wallpaper is off, provided it is sound. On the quote visit we tap every wall: hollow or blown patches are cut out and made good before the skim, and walls with damp or salt damage are treated rather than covered. Lath and plaster ceilings that have cracked but are still firm can be scrimmed and skimmed; sagging ones are overboarded.

Artex is everywhere in the city's 1960s and 70s housing and the flats that were modernised then. Light artex is sealed and skimmed in a day; heavy patterns and cracked ceilings are overboarded and skimmed. We never sand artex, because coatings from before the mid 1980s can contain asbestos.

We also skim new plasterboard in extensions, loft rooms and refitted kitchens and bathrooms across the city, and make good after rewires and plumbing, so the whole room is one smooth surface rather than a patchwork.

Our promise

If a wall or ceiling we plastered is not right, we come back and sort it. We prepare the background properly and use the right plaster for it, which is why that rarely happens.

FAQ

Plasterer questions from Newcastle

Usually, yes. Where the lath and plaster in the middle of the ceiling has failed but the cornice is sound, we can cut the flat area out carefully, board it and skim up to the cornice so the original moulding stays. If the cornice itself has cracked or dropped, we tell you on the visit whether it can be repaired in place or needs a matching run made. Either way we protect it while we work.

Plastering itself is quiet. The noisy part is hacking off old plaster or taking down a ceiling, which we keep to set hours and usually get done in the first morning. If your ceiling is coming down, the floor above it belongs to you, not your neighbour, so their ceiling is not touched. We are happy to have a word with the downstairs flat before we start so nobody is caught off guard.

Yes, most people do. We work a room or two at a time, sheet the floors and stairs, close doors with dust sheets and take the rubbish away each day, so the rest of the house stays usable. Hacking off old plaster is the dusty stage and we do it before anything else. Kitchens are the room to plan around, and we will agree the order with you when we quote.
