Which type do you need?
The right approach depends on the condition of your walls. We'll always advise on the best method when we see the job.
Skimming
Skimming is applying a thin (2–3mm) coat of finish plaster over an existing surface to create a smooth, flat finish ready for painting or wallpapering. It’s the most common type of plastering work we do.

construction What to expect
A single room skim usually takes about a day. We apply two coats of multi-finish plaster with a trowel, building up a smooth, flat surface. The finish is polished to a glass-like smoothness. The plaster will need 2–4 weeks to dry before painting.

Float and set (also called two-coat work) involves applying a base coat of bonding or browning plaster to level the wall, followed by a skim coat on top. It’s used when walls are too uneven for a straight skim.

The base coat is applied first and scratched to create a key. Once it’s set (usually the next day), the finish skim coat goes on top. A typical room takes 2–3 days. It’s more involved than skimming but gives a perfect result on poor surfaces.

Rendering is the application of a sand and cement mix (or modern alternatives like K-Rend) to external walls. It protects the masonry from weather, improves insulation, and transforms the appearance of your property.

construction What to expect
External rendering usually takes 2–5 days depending on the size of the property. We prepare the surface, apply the render in coats, and finish to the required texture. K-Rend and coloured renders are self-coloured, so they don’t need painting.

Plasterboarding (or dry lining) involves fixing sheets of plasterboard to walls or ceilings before skimming. It’s a fast, effective way to create smooth surfaces, add insulation, or cover up problem walls.

construction What to expect
Plasterboard is cut to size and fixed to the wall with adhesive (dot and dab) or screwed to timber/metal battens. The joints are taped and the whole surface is skimmed to a smooth finish. It’s quicker than traditional wet plastering on bad walls.

A good plaster job needs proper aftercare. Follow these steps to get the best possible finish.
Let it dry naturally
Don’t blast new plaster with heaters or dehumidifiers. Let it dry at its own pace, usually 2–4 weeks. Opening windows for gentle ventilation is fine.
Mist coat first
Before painting, apply a mist coat: emulsion watered down by about 50%. This seals the plaster and gives your topcoats something to grip onto.
Wait for even colour
New plaster dries in patches, and dark areas indicate it is still damp. Don’t paint until the whole surface is a uniform light pink. Painting too early traps moisture.
Avoid hanging things too soon
Give the plaster at least a week before drilling or putting up shelves. For heavy items, make sure you’re fixing into the masonry behind, not just the plaster.

“On pricing this job, the customer used an 'experienced tradesman' who used a steamer to remove wallpaper from plasterboard walls and they were removing the jointing tape and the skin from the plasterboard, thus leaving an unlevel surface. I suggested reboarding but they said they didn't have a lot of money to play with. While the 'tradesman' was removing the wallpaper the customer demanded via text that I go that very minute to see what a mess this tradesman was making. While we were working, her husband commented on how we were the best tradesmen they'd had, as we just got on with the job. I'd mistakingly missed out a price for a ceiling, so I skimmed that for no extra charge as the price had already been agreed. (No mention of this was in her review however). We always ask customers to check the work before we leave and both said they were 'over the moon' with the work and they paid via bank transfer a few hours after I'd left. It's clear the 'tradesman' hasn't prepped the newly plastered walls properly, as the paint has now blebbed. That's not a fault with the plastering, but with the lack of preparation on the decorator's behalf. It took 7 days for the customer to let me know she wasn't happy (and that was after the walls had been painted!).”
