Plastering and damp proofing in Consett

Consett sits high on the edge of the Pennines, which makes it one of the most exposed towns in the region. Its homes face colder winters and more wind-driven rain than towns down in the valleys, and that shows in the walls.

Local knowledge

Homes in Consett

Consett grew as a steel town, and many of its older homes are terraces built for the steel and mining workers, with solid stone or brick walls.

At this height the weather is harsh. Wind-driven rain, frost and snow are hard on render and pointing, and penetrating damp is one of the most common problems we see here.

There are also plenty of post-war and modern estates, where condensation in cold rooms and cracked plasterboard are the usual jobs.

What we see

Common problems in Consett

We find the cause before we quote, so the fix lasts and you only pay for what the job needs.

Penetrating damp on exposed walls

Walls facing the prevailing wind take a battering. Rain driven into cracked render or worn pointing comes through to the inside.

water_drop

Frost-damaged render

Water in cracks freezes and expands, breaking the render away from the wall. Once it is loose, it lets in more water.

Cold walls and condensation

Cold external walls attract condensation, leading to mould in corners and behind furniture. The fix often involves the walls and the ventilation together.

“On pricing this job, the customer used an 'experienced tradesman' who used a steamer to remove wallpaper from plasterboard walls and they were removing the jointing tape and the skin from the plasterboard, thus leaving an unlevel surface. I suggested reboarding but they said they didn't have a lot of money to play with. While the 'tradesman' was removing the wallpaper the customer demanded via text that I go that very minute to see what a mess this tradesman was making. While we were working, her husband commented on how we were the best tradesmen they'd had, as we just got on with the job. I'd mistakingly missed out a price for a ceiling, so I skimmed that for no extra charge as the price had already been agreed. (No mention of this was in her review however). We always ask customers to check the work before we leave and both said they were 'over the moon' with the work and they paid via bank transfer a few hours after I'd left. It's clear the 'tradesman' hasn't prepped the newly plastered walls properly, as the paint has now blebbed. That's not a fault with the plastering, but with the lack of preparation on the decorator's behalf. It took 7 days for the customer to let me know she wasn't happy (and that was after the walls had been painted!).”

“Dean came out to give me a quote, he knew what needed doing and I was happy with what he quoted. He took down 2 ceilings, replaced them, skimmed and then put up some coving. I can’t fault his work at all, the ceilings look amazing, he left my home clean and tidy. I’d highly recommend. .”

“Advertised for a garage conversion at short notice did not expect to get it done so quickly. Dene and his team worked 12 hrs a day as my Tennent went on holiday for 2 weeks and it was all done for their return, Dene even managed to do decorating and flooring too in my budget. Brilliant job by all the team.”
