Plasterer in Whitley Bay

A plasterer covering Whitley Bay, Monkseaton, West Monkseaton, Cullercoats and Earsdon. The Edwardian seafront terraces, the 1930s bay-fronted semis and the Cullercoats cottages all need plastering done with the coast in mind: salt damage treated before new plaster goes on, bay fronts stripped and floated rather than skimmed over. Reskims, ceilings, boarding and artex too. Fixed quotes after a visit and no travel charges.

Plastering Whitley Bay homes

On the Links, the Esplanade and the terraces behind them, the front rooms have taken a century of sea weather and the plaster on bay fronts and chimney breasts is often soft, salty and hollow. Skimming over that is a waste of money. We strip it back, let the wall dry, treat any salts, float and set and then skim, and we fix the outside first where rain is still getting in.

Monkseaton, West Monkseaton, Whitley Lodge and Hillheads are 1930s and post-war semis: artex ceilings, textured walls, cracked plasterboard along the joints and walls damaged by decades of wallpaper. These are reskim and overboarding jobs, a room a day, with artex sealed and skimmed or boarded over and never sanded.

Cullercoats and the older cottages around Earsdon have stone walls and lime plaster that are not square and never will be. We plaster those to the wall rather than against it, with scrim on movement cracks and breathable systems where the wall needs them, and the finish is smooth without looking out of place.

Skimming Whitley Bay homes

The seafront terraces on the Links and the Esplanade have front rooms where a century of driven rain has left the plaster on bay fronts and chimney breasts soft and salty. We treat and replaster those areas before skimming, and we fix the outside first where water is still getting in. Everything else in the house skims normally.

Monkseaton, West Monkseaton, Whitley Lodge and Hillheads are 1930s and post-war semis with artex ceilings and walls that have had decades of wallpaper. Light artex is sealed and skimmed; heavy or cracked ceilings are overboarded and skimmed; walls are brought back flat in a day per room. Artex is never sanded because older coatings can contain asbestos.

Cullercoats' stone cottages have walls that are not square and lime plaster that needs to breathe. We skim those to the wall with a breathable system where it matters, so the finish is smooth without trapping moisture in the stone.

Our promise

If a wall or ceiling we plastered is not right, we come back and sort it. We prepare the background properly and use the right plaster for it, which is why that rarely happens.

FAQ

Plasterer questions from Whitley Bay

On the coast it is usually salt and moisture coming through the stack, either from driven rain or from a chimney that has been capped without ventilation. The salts draw moisture from the air and break the plaster down. Replastering alone will fail again. We find where the moisture is coming from, sort that first, then replaster with a system that copes with any salts left in the brick.

Yes. Bay ceilings and reveals are fiddly, with angles and curves, but we work up to the frames and mask them before we start. If the plaster around the window is soft or cracked from weather getting in, we treat that area first so the skim does not fail. Frames, glass and cills are covered throughout.

Plastering indoors carries on all year, but in winter new plaster takes longer to dry, especially in rooms on the sea side of the house. Keep the heating on gently and a window open a little, and the plaster will dry evenly. Do not use heaters right up against the walls, because uneven drying can crack the finish. We tell you what to expect for your rooms.
