Plastering Gateshead homes

Bensham, Saltwell and the older streets of Felling and Dunston are solid-walled terraces and Tyneside flats, and the plaster in them has had a hard century. Hollow patches, cracks following the brick lines, and the salt damage of old rising damp along the bottom metre are all common. We tell you on the visit which walls can take a skim and which need stripping and floating first, and we treat the damp before any new plaster goes on.

Low Fell, Sheriff Hill, Lobley Hill and Wrekenton have interwar and post-war semis with artex ceilings, textured walls from the 1970s and plaster that has suffered from decades of wallpaper being stripped off. Those are reskim jobs: seal, scrim, two coats of multi-finish, done in a day per room. Where the artex is heavy or cracked we overboard it first, and we never sand old artex.

In Whickham, Ryton, Birtley and the newer estates we do a lot of boarding and skimming for extensions, loft rooms, garage conversions and refits, and the patching that follows rewires and new plumbing. New plasterboard is taped, filled and skimmed to a flat finish with sharp corners, and the rubbish goes with us.

Skimming Gateshead homes

In the solid-walled terraces and Tyneside flats of Bensham, Saltwell, Felling and Dunston, the plaster is old and we check it wall by wall. Sound plaster takes a skim well once the paper is off and the cracks are scrimmed; hollow or salty plaster along the bottom of a front room is cut out and treated first, because a skim over it fails within months.

The semis of Low Fell, Sheriff Hill, Lobley Hill and Wrekenton are artex country. Light artex is sealed and skimmed in a day; heavy or cracked ceilings are overboarded with new plasterboard and skimmed. We never sand artex because older coatings can contain asbestos.

New plasterboard in extensions, loft rooms and garage conversions across Whickham, Ryton, Birtley and the estates is taped, filled and skimmed to a flat finish with sharp corners, and we make good after electricians and plumbers so the room is one surface.

Our promise

If a wall or ceiling we plastered is not right, we come back and sort it. We prepare the background properly and use the right plaster for it, which is why that rarely happens.

FAQ

Plasterer questions from Gateshead

It happens a lot in older Gateshead terraces, because wallpaper can hold up plaster that has already come away from the brick. We tap every wall on the quote visit, but if more hollow plaster shows once the paper is off, we stop and show you before doing anything extra. You get a fixed price for the extra work and decide before we carry on. Nothing is added to your bill without you agreeing it first.

Yes. Loft rooms are mostly plasterboard on timber, often with sloping ceilings, dormers and awkward angles. We fix the boards to the right centres, scrim every joint and corner, and skim the whole room so the slopes and walls meet in clean lines. If you are insulating at the same time, we can use insulated board on the slopes. We take the rubbish down and out ourselves.

Wall units and worktops can usually go back as soon as the plaster has set hard, often within a couple of days. Tiling should wait until the plaster is properly dry, which in a warm, ventilated kitchen is typically two to three weeks for a skim and longer for float and set. We will tell you what the walls need before your kitchen fitter books in.
