Water coming through your walls?
Penetrating damp is driven rain, leaking gutters, or failed pointing forcing water through your external walls. It shows up as damp patches, peeling paint, and black mould, often far from the actual entry point. We trace it, stop it, and repair the damage.

Water can travel along lintels, through cavities, and along wall ties before appearing internally. We trace the path back to the entry point, whether it’s failed pointing, cracked render, blocked cavity trays, or corroded wall ties.
We repoint failed mortar joints, apply silicone-based water repellent to porous masonry, repair cracked render, and replace corroded wall ties. The external envelope is sealed against driven rain.
Corroded wall ties create direct bridges for water between the outer and inner leaf. We remove failed ties, install stainless steel remedial ties, and seal the drill holes to stop the damp path completely.
Once the source is sealed, we strip off damp-damaged plaster, apply salt-resistant basecoat if needed, replaster, and skim smooth. The room is left dry and ready for decorating.
Outside in: we fix the source first, then repair the damage.
We inspect externally and internally, using moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint exactly where water is entering.
Repointing, render repairs, gutter fixes, wall tie replacement, or or silicone treatment, whatever is needed to stop water getting in.
Damaged internal plaster is removed. Walls are allowed to dry out before replastering to prevent trapping moisture behind new plaster.
Fresh plaster and a smooth skim coat are applied. The room is left clean, dry, and ready for painting.
Penetrating damp is rain getting through the wall from outside. It follows the weather, gets worse after storms, and sits wherever the water finds a way in: cracked or hollow render, eroded pointing, a cracked cill or one without a drip, a blocked or leaking gutter, a failed flashing around a chimney, a bridged cavity, or porous brick on an exposed gable. Inside it shows as patches that darken when it rains, peeling paper on chimney breasts and soft plaster around windows.
Because the water is coming from outside, the fix is outside, and no amount of replastering or damp-proof paint inside will hold it back. We find the entry point, repair it, repointing, render repairs, new cills, gutters cleared or renewed, flashings resealed, cavities cleared, and then let the wall dry before replastering inside. Where a whole elevation of render has failed, re-rendering in a water-shedding silicone system is the lasting answer.
The North East coast makes this the most common damp we see from Whitley Bay down to Seaham and Blyth across to South Shields, and the exposed hillsides of Gateshead and County Durham are not far behind. We do the external repairs and the internal replastering with one team, so the job is finished once.
If a repair we made is not right, we come back and sort it. Replastering inside is only done once the wall has dried, so the new finish lasts.

Penetrating damp can appear at any height, often around windows, chimney breasts and on the weather side of the house, and gets worse after rain. Rising damp stays in the bottom metre of ground floor walls and leaves a tide mark with salts.
Because the water is still coming in. Paint and damp-proof coatings inside hide the stain for a while and trap moisture in the wall. The entry point outside has to be fixed first.
Not always. If the render is sound and the water is coming through a cracked cill or failed pointing, a local repair does it. If the render is hollow across the elevation, patching it is a false economy.

“On pricing this job, the customer used an 'experienced tradesman' who used a steamer to remove wallpaper from plasterboard walls and they were removing the jointing tape and the skin from the plasterboard, thus leaving an unlevel surface. I suggested reboarding but they said they didn't have a lot of money to play with. While the 'tradesman' was removing the wallpaper the customer demanded via text that I go that very minute to see what a mess this tradesman was making. While we were working, her husband commented on how we were the best tradesmen they'd had, as we just got on with the job. I'd mistakingly missed out a price for a ceiling, so I skimmed that for no extra charge as the price had already been agreed. (No mention of this was in her review however). We always ask customers to check the work before we leave and both said they were 'over the moon' with the work and they paid via bank transfer a few hours after I'd left. It's clear the 'tradesman' hasn't prepped the newly plastered walls properly, as the paint has now blebbed. That's not a fault with the plastering, but with the lack of preparation on the decorator's behalf. It took 7 days for the customer to let me know she wasn't happy (and that was after the walls had been painted!).”
