DPC Installation in Sunderland
Sunderland cottages, the single-storey terraces of Millfield, Pallion, Hendon, Fulwell and Southwick, are the most DPC-dependent homes in the North East: every room sits on the ground, so a failed or bridged damp course affects the whole house. The Victorian terraces of Ashbrooke, Barnes and Roker have the same solid walls and old courses. We install chemical damp proof courses across Sunderland, replaster with a renovation system and guarantee the work. Fixed quotes, no travel charges.

Damp proof courses in Sunderland homes
A cottage's original damp course, where there is one, is usually bridged by the concrete yard, the raised lane behind, or a render plinth added later. Because the cottage is all ground floor, we survey every external and party wall, inject along the runs that need it and replaster them with renovation plaster, often finishing a whole cottage in under a week. Lowering the outside ground level or cutting the render back above the course is part of the job where it is the cause.
On the coast at Roker, Seaburn and Fulwell, a tide mark on a front wall can be rising damp, salt-laden penetrating damp or both. We take readings up the wall and check the outside before injecting anything, because a damp course does nothing for water coming through a cracked bay front.
The larger Ashbrooke and Barnes houses have thick solid walls and high skirtings, so the plaster strip goes higher and the injection depth is set for the wall. Breathable renovation plaster lets those walls dry out through the finish once the new course has stopped the rise.

Inside walls, new floors and living in a Sunderland cottage during the work
In a Sunderland cottage the rising damp is not only on the outside walls. The internal walls dividing front room, back room and kitchen stand straight on the ground too, and often show the same tide mark and salts. A proper survey reads every wall in the cottage, including the spine wall and the chimney breast, because injecting the outside walls alone leaves damp climbing through the middle of the house. Chimney breasts need extra care, since soot and old coal-fire salts can hold moisture and look like rising damp when they are not. We also look at where the cottage meets any rear extension, because the two often have damp courses at different heights and the join between them is a weak spot that needs its own attention.
Plenty of cottages have had their original boarded floors replaced with concrete at some point, and if that slab was poured higher than the old damp course, or without a membrane lapped up the wall, it pushes moisture into the brick above. We check floor levels against the injection line before we start. Because a cottage is compact, we usually work room by room so you can keep living in it, with dust sheets, the rooms not being worked on kept clear, and rubbish taken away each day. In most cottages we finish the injection and the strip-out early in the job, so the noisy and dusty part is over quickly and the rest is the quieter work of replastering.

Our 20-year guarantee
Every damp proof course we install comes with a written 20-year guarantee from the date the work is finished. If rising damp comes back through the damp course we put in, we inspect the wall and carry out further treatment. The guarantee transfers to a new owner if you sell, and the full terms are set out on the certificate you receive.

DPC Installation questions from Sunderland
Quite often, yes. Internal walls in cottages sit directly on the ground just like the external ones. We take readings on every wall, and if an internal wall has rising damp it is injected and replastered along with the rest. If it reads dry, it is left alone and not included in the quote. The chimney breast is tested separately, because its salts behave differently.
It can. If the new floor was laid above the level of the old damp course, or without a membrane turned up the wall, ground moisture is pushed into the brickwork just above it. We measure the floor against the wall and set the new injection line so it sits correctly against the floor. Sometimes cutting a small channel at the wall base is part of the fix as well.
Yes. We work a room at a time, sheet everything, keep the other rooms usable and clear our rubbish each day. Most families stay put. The only time we suggest otherwise is if the whole ground floor needs doing at once and there is nowhere else to sleep. We plan the order with you so a kitchen or bedroom is always usable.
