Plasterer in Sunderland
We plaster across Sunderland every week, from the cottages of Millfield, Fulwell and Hendon to the terraces of Ashbrooke and Roker and the estates at Pennywell, Doxford Park and Silksworth. Reskims, float and set on bare brick, boarding, ceilings taken down and replaced, artex covered, and the full replaster that follows damp work. Fixed quotes after a visit, no travel charges, and walls your decorator will not have to fill.

Plastering Sunderland homes
Sunderland cottages are low, compact and solid-walled, and the plaster in them is often the original lime or an early gypsum that has been patched for decades. When the walls are sound, a full reskim of a cottage can be done in a couple of days and transforms it. When they are blown or damp, which is common along the lower courses, we strip back and float and set before skimming, so the finish lasts rather than cracking within a year.
The larger Victorian houses of Ashbrooke, Barnes and Thornhill have high ceilings, ornate cornices and lath and plaster that has usually reached the end of its life. We overboard or replace those ceilings, reinstate coving where it has been lost, and skim high walls with proper staging so the lines stay true. The seafront terraces of Roker and Seaburn add salt damage on the front rooms, which we treat before replastering.
On the post-war estates and the newer housing at Doxford Park, Grindon and Ryhope the usual jobs are artex ceilings, walls damaged by stripping wallpaper, and boarding and skimming after kitchen and bathroom refits. Artex is skimmed over or overboarded, never sanded, and a typical room is done in a day with the room cleaned and the rubbish taken.

Skimming Sunderland homes
Sunderland cottages reskim beautifully because they are compact: walls and ceilings in every room can often be done in two or three days and the whole house feels new. The one check that matters is the bottom metre of the walls, where old rising damp leaves salts that will stain through a skim. We treat that first where we find it, and skim everything else.
The tall rooms of Ashbrooke, Barnes and Thornhill need staging and care to keep the lines true across big ceilings and long walls, and cornices need protecting. Lath and plaster ceilings that are firm are scrimmed and skimmed; those that have dropped are overboarded first.
On the estates the common jobs are artex ceilings and walls wrecked by steamers and scrapers. Artex is sealed and skimmed or overboarded, never sanded, and a typical room is done in a day with the room cleaned and the rubbish taken.

Our promise
If a wall or ceiling we plastered is not right, we come back and sort it. We prepare the background properly and use the right plaster for it, which is why that rarely happens.

Plasterer questions from Sunderland
A whole cottage at once is usually quicker and works out better value, because we set up once, sheet the floors once and keep the finish consistent from room to room. Because a cottage is all on one level, there is nowhere to move the furniture upstairs, so we work through it in an order you can live with, often two rooms a day, and agree that order with you when we quote.
It means proper staging rather than a stepladder, so the whole ceiling can be worked in one go and the finish stays even. High walls also take longer to skim because each coat has to be laid on and trowelled up across a bigger area before it sets. We price for that on the visit, and nothing changes once we have quoted. If there are picture rails or deep skirtings, we work round them and protect them.
Empty the room as far as you can, take pictures, curtains and blinds down, and remove wallpaper if you are happy to, though we can strip it as part of the job. Loose sockets and switches should be made safe by an electrician if they are coming off. We sheet everything that stays, so heavy furniture can be pushed to the middle and covered rather than moved out.
