Rendering in Gateshead

We render across Gateshead, from the exposed hilltop semis of Low Fell, Sheriff Hill and Wrekenton, where the weather finds every crack, to the terraces and Tyneside flats of Bensham, Saltwell, Felling and Dunston and the villages of Whickham, Ryton and Birtley. Failed cement render and pebbledash removed, brick repaired, and new sand and cement or through-coloured silicone render applied to last. Fixed quotes after a visit, scaffolding included where needed, no travel charges.

Rendering Gateshead homes

Low Fell and the ridge above the town catch the wind and rain from the west, and the interwar semis there have pebbledash and painted render that has cracked, blown and let water into the wall. We take off what has failed, repair the brickwork and pointing, and re-render; where the dash is sound we can render over it with a coloured silicone system for a smooth finish that does not need painting every few years.

Bensham, Saltwell and Felling have long runs of terraces and Tyneside flats that were cement rendered decades ago. That render is now trapping damp against solid brick and bridging the damp course where it runs to the ground. We re-render with a bell cast above the DPC so the wall can breathe, and we treat the rising damp inside at the same time where it has taken hold.

In Whickham, Ryton, Birtley and the newer estates the jobs are extensions and garages rendered to match the house, mismatched brick at the back covered and sealed, and whole elevations recoloured in silicone render. We match textures and colours to what is there, or change the look completely if that is what you want.

Rendering on Gateshead's steep streets and exposed hillsides

A lot of Gateshead is built on slopes. Streets in Low Fell, Bensham, Saltwell and Sheriff Hill climb steeply, so the ground level changes along the length of a terrace and from front to back of a semi. That affects rendering in two ways. Scaffolding has to be levelled on stepped bases so it is safe on the slope, which we plan on the quote visit. And the bell cast at the base of the render has to follow the damp course as the ground falls away, rather than running in a straight line, so the render always stops above it and never bridges it.

The hilltop estates catch the weather from the west, which shortens the dry spells a render needs to cure. Sand and cement needs a few dry, frost-free days between coats, and silicone systems need dry conditions to apply and set. We plan Gateshead rendering jobs for the drier part of the year where we can, protect fresh work with sheeting when showers come through, and will not apply a coat in frost or heavy rain, even if it means holding off a day.

Our promise

If render we applied is not right, we come back and sort it. We test and prepare the wall first and use the right system for it.

FAQ

Rendering questions from Gateshead

Yes. Steep streets are normal in Gateshead. The scaffolding is set on stepped, levelled bases so it is safe on the slope, and the bottom edge of the render is set to follow the damp course as the ground falls, so it never bridges it. All of that is planned on the quote visit and included in the price.

Spring to early autumn is best, because render needs dry, frost-free days to cure properly, and the higher parts of Gateshead get a lot of westerly weather. We can render at other times when the forecast allows, with fresh work sheeted against showers, but we will not render in frost or heavy rain.

It can. Where a gable is cold or damp, an insulated render system adds a layer of insulation under a new render coat, which warms the inside face of the wall and helps stop condensation. It suits solid or poorly insulated walls best. We will tell you on the visit whether your wall is a good candidate.
