Rendering in Durham

We render in Durham City and the villages around it. The brick terraces of Gilesgate, Framwellgate Moor and the pit villages, the 1960s and 70s houses of Newton Hall and Belmont with their original tired render, and extensions and rear elevations across the area. Failed render stripped, brick repaired, new sand and cement or through-coloured silicone render applied properly with beads, bell casts and movement joints. Fixed quotes, scaffolding included where needed, no travel charges.

Rendering Durham homes

Newton Hall, Belmont and Carrville were built with rendered panels and gables that are now fifty years old, and a lot of that render has cracked and let water behind it. We take off what is hollow, repair the background and re-render, usually in a coloured silicone system so the house gets a clean modern finish that never needs painting and sheds the rain.

The terraces of the former pit villages, Brandon, Bowburn, Langley Moor, Meadowfield and Ushaw Moor, were often cement rendered in the 70s and 80s. That render traps damp in solid brick and runs down to the ground where it bridges the damp course. We re-render with a proper bell cast above the DPC and treat any rising damp inside at the same time.

Durham's older city terraces are often in conservation areas, where the look of a render matters. We match existing finishes, use lime-compatible mixes where a stone or lime-built wall needs to breathe, and advise on what will and will not be acceptable before we start.

Rendering student lets and estate houses around Durham

A lot of Durham houses are let, to students in the city and to families in the villages, and landlords want rendering done with as little disruption to tenants as possible. We agree the dates in advance, give tenants notice of when the scaffold is going up and coming down, and keep access to front and back doors clear throughout. Summer, between academic years, is the natural window for student houses in Gilesgate, the Viaduct and Crossgate, and we book those jobs early because that window is short.

On the large estates of Newton Hall, Belmont and Carrville, houses share a design and often a colour scheme, and a re-rendered house that drifts too far from its neighbours can look out of place. Through-coloured silicone render comes in a wide range of shades, so we can stay close to the existing look or change it if you would rather. Some newer estates have covenants on external appearance, so it is worth checking your deeds before choosing a bold colour.

FAQ

Rendering questions from Durham

Yes, and summer is the best time for it, between tenancies and when the weather suits curing. We fix the dates and the price in advance and book early, because the gap between tenancies is short and in demand. Where tenants are still in, we keep access clear and give them notice of each stage.

Usually, but check your deeds first, because some estates have covenants about changing the outside of a house. Through-coloured silicone render comes in many shades, so we can match the neighbours closely or give you something different within whatever limits apply.

The scaffold is netted, walkways are kept clear and the work area is tidied every day. Doors and windows are kept usable, and we tell occupants in advance when the scaffold goes up, when the noisy preparation days are and when it comes down.
